Improvement of the Demulsification Process in Crude Oil using Silica Nano particles

The formation of emulsions during oil production is a costly problem, both in terms of chemicals used and production lost. The water in oil emulsions have to be treated for the crude oil to meet the targeted specifications and at the same time the cost of this treatment has to be reduced to the minimum. Nanomaterials, with their unique chemical and physical properties, provide an attractive option. In this study the use of hydrophilic silica nanoparticles to enhance the performance of the chemical demulsifier added to the crude oil is suggested. The high porosity and surface area of these nanoparticles present an extraordinary permeability and selectivity. These unique properties will increase the efficiency of the process and reduce the cost.
