Foundation: |

The Faculty of Science was founded in
1937 as one of the Higher Schools of Gordon Memorial College. In
1945 these schools came under a single independent administration.
In 1947 the School of Science became the Faculty of Science and
continued to maintain this name until the University College of
Khartoum became the University of Khartoum in 1956.

Students: |
|
|
|
The total enrollment of the students
in the Faculty is (1744) students in all specializations. For the
year 1997-1998, (224) students graduated with B.Sc. General and
Honours degree. Since the commencement of the postgraduate studies
in the Faculty, (505) students were awarded M.Sc. and (105) students
were awarded Ph.D. degrees. |

Laboratories:
|
|
|
|
There are teaching laboratories in the
faculty at all levels: for Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Botany and
Zoology. Each laboratory accommodates between (60-160) students, in
addition to a number of reseach laboratories for research by members
of the academic staff and post graduate students. |

The Library: |
|
|
|
Each of the five departments has its
own specialized library that accommodates between (40-120)
students. They serve graduate and post graduate students as well as
members of the academic staff, as well as research students and
teaching staff from other universities. |

Research
Activities: |
|
|
|
Members of the academic staff and post
graduate students of the Faculty conduct a wide range of researches
and studies, particularly in the fields of Bilharzia, Wild Animals,
Marine Sciences, Hydrology, Petroleum, Geological Engineering,
Theoretical Physics, Nuclear Physics, Solid State Physics, Materials
Science. Analysis of Materials. |

Cultural
Relations: |
|
|
|
The Faculty
sustains relations with various universities and academic centers in
foreign countries, including in The Netherlands, Germany, France
and Sweden. The Faculty undertakes jointly approved academic
programmes or common research projects with these universities and
academic centers. An active cooperation relation is maintained with
the University of Leiden, The Netherlands The Faculty also maintains
relations with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)
in Italy and the International Atomic Energy Agency (Vienna
Considerable benefits have been derived from these relations
illustrated in the acquisition of advanced scientific equipment and
materials, and the exchange of visits by experts and scholars from
both sides. |
